Prescriber's Letter eTOC

Etoc_4 You can get the Prescriber's Letter Table of Contents emailed to you every month.  It will alert you when the monthly newsletter is ready, include links to articles and detail-documents, and include links to CME.

It's free. To sign up, click here to be taken to the sign up page.

The Prescriber’s Letter is a subscription service (the library has an online subscription) for prescribers to keep them up to date on new developments in drug therapy. Concise updates are paired with detailed, referenced evidence-based articles. To access the Prescriber's Letter, go to the library's home page and click on "Prescriber's Letter" in the scroll box.  If you are off campus, be sure to click on the "Off-Campus Access (EZProxy)" link first.  There are a limited number of simultaneous users, so you may have to check back if there is heavy traffic!

Inter-Library Loan Form Now Available via EZProxy

Faculty, students and staff may request books and articles that are not available from any library on campus by completing an Inter-Library Loan Request Form.  It may be found by clicking on the "Inter-Library Loan" link found on the top menu bar of the library's home page.  From that link, scroll down the page and click where it says "Go to Inter-Library Loan Request Form."  At this point, you will now need to enter your College of Medicine username and password.  This is the same password that you use to access the library's resources from off campus.  Once you have done that, you will be connected to the form.

New Ovid Interface

Ovidscreenshot_2 Ovid has launched a new interface called OvidSP. To try it out, from any Ovid Gateway page, just click on the "Try OvidSP!" link. This link will be on every page in Ovid and will take you to the new interface.

We will have access to both the current version of Ovid (Gateway) and the new Ovid SP until February 2008. This is a great opportunity to become more familiar with the new interface.

All of your alerts, jumpstarts, and saved searches will be available in the new interface.

For those Ovid users who prefer the current version, you will still be able to access "Ovid Syntax" through the new version, which will look similar to the current version of Ovid.

Faculty can register for this service by submitting the registration form at http://www.lib.fsu.edu/services/materials/feds.  Forms for requesting delivery or pick up of materials are also available on this web page.  A link to this page is available on the "Services for Faculty" page on the FSU Libraries' web site.

PubMed Database Problems and Fixes

Due to upgrades completed this summer to the PubMed database by the U.S. National Library of Medicine many people have reported problems using PubMed.  Reported problems include disappearance of the FSU Links icons which link you to our electronic journals.  Others have experienced “Bad Server" messages.  More frequently and problematic is the loss of the contents of Clipboards or Search History.

The National Library of Medicine has issued the following statement:  Please … ensure your browser and any servers you go through are enabled for Javascript (scripting), cookies, pop-ups, and HTTP 1.1 when you are using PubMed. Also, nlm.nih.gov should be considered a trusted site by your system(s). You may have to delete your browser's cache (temporary files) before trying again.

Before you change the settings on your browser please try refreshing your screen by clicking on your browser's Refresh\Reload button.  If this doesn't fix the problem you should try clearing out your browser’s cache.

The majority of problems reported are from people using Internet Explorer versions older than the current version 7.  To find out what version you have click on the word “Help” in your browser menu, and then click on “About Internet Explorer”.

National Network of Libraries of Medicine Express Planning Award

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine Southeastern/Atlantic Region (NN/LM SE/A) has just awarded an Express Planning Award to fund planning for a Florida Consumer Health Information Network.    A statewide steering committee composed of 18 members of the Florida healthcare and library communities has already begun discussions to address this need.  Members represent all medical schools in Florida, major Florida healthcare organizations, including the Florida Health Sciences Library Association and the Florida Library Association, the State Library and Archives of Florida, the Florida AHEC programs and the colleges of library and information science in Florida.   The committee is chaired by the FSU College of Medicine library director, Barbara Shearer, who will administer the award.

The planning award will fund a series of meetings with the steering committee and other stakeholders to develop a plan for the delivery of consumer health information resources and services to the residents of Florida and to explore a number of strategies, including partnering with state and local healthcare providers, state agencies and regional organizations.   One project the steering committee has identified is creation of a consumer health portal which will be a selective resource that aggregates information systematically, reviews it for quality and currency, and delivers it to the residents of Florida. This website will deliver quality-filtered consumer health information resources, along with descriptive directory information and links to points of contact for consumer health services in Florida.  Healthcare providers, librarians, and patients will use the network to access quality-filtered resources. The result will be patients who are more informed of best practices and treatments and are enabled to address their specific healthcare needs.

The planning initiative has been funded by the NN/LM for one year beginning October 1, 2007.  The next meeting of the steering committee is scheduled for December 10, 2007, in Orlando, at Nova Southeastern University.
