SciVee Website for Scientific Communication

Scivee_2 SciVee <http://www.scivee.tv/about> is a new website that lets scientists communicate their works as multimedia presentations incorporated with the content of their published articles. SciVee is operated in partnership with the open access publisher the Public Library of Science (PLoS), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC).

The initial premise behind SciVee is to provide a form of scientific communication that's intermediate between abstracts (which take a few minutes to read) and a full reading of a paper (which can take hours). SciVee allows authors to upload an article they have already published with a video or podcast presentation they have made that describes the highlights of the paper. The author can then synchronize the video with the content of the article (text, figures, etc.) so the relevant parts of the article appear as the author discusses them during the video presentation. The result is a SciVee pubcast. The site provides several tutorials on recording a video.

The goal of SciVee is to help solve the information overload currently facing biomedical scientists. For example, the PubMed database indexes 16,000 new publications a week. When an article is uploaded to SciVee, National Library of Medicine MeSH (Medical Subject Heading) terms that have been assigned are extracted so they can be used as search keywords.

Currently, scientists can upload videos related to publications from any journal. For some open access publications, the full text and details of the publication can be fetched to associate with the video. For other open access publications and all closed access publications, the abstract of the paper can be associated with the video to create a SciVee pubcast.

PLoS publications are open access so the full text of the paper is available for free and unrestricted access. So, if an author has published in a PLoS journal, the full text of the paper can be associated with a video on the SciVee Website. Papers published by BioMed Central are available for free and unrestricted access.

Scientists can become part of an international community of scientists by creating a personal profile and joining or creating their own science communities. SciVee Communities are virtual communities that can be created to nurture interest in a particular topic. These communities can be created by any SciVee user and any SciVee user can join a community. Within the community, users can add pubcasts and videos of interest to the community and start discussions among community members by making comments directly to the community or on the pubcasts and videos.

New ClinicalTrials.gov Interface

Clinicaltrials_2 A new ClinicalTrials.gov user interface was launched on November 8th, 2007 at http://ClinicalTrials.gov.  This is the first significant change to the interface since 2000.  ClinicalTrials.gov is a registry of federally and privately supported clinical trials conducted in the United States and around the world. ClinicalTrials.gov gives you information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers for more details.

New features include highlighted search terms, more display options, and additional capabilities for viewing studies and search results by topic. Improvements were also made to “Advanced search” and the display by location on the world map. More information about the new features may be found in the September-October issue of the NLM Technical Bulletin.

Bandwidth Source for Communications Tools and Information

Bandwidthlogo_5 Bandwidth <http://www.bandwidthonline.org/> is the John A. Hartford Foundation's one-stop, online source for communications tools and information. This password protected site is designed to help grantees of the foundation enhance, strengthen, and add visual impact to publications, presentations, and communications about aging and health.

Though it is focused on aging, it would be of benefit to any faculty preparing presentations, advocacy campaigns, etc.

If you are a FSU faculty member, when you get to the password screen, send an email requesting one.  Just say you are part of the FL Reynolds Grant.  For more information, contact Dr. Kenneth Brummel-Smith, Charlotte Edwards Maguire Professor and Chair, Department of Geriatrics.

RSS Medical Directory

Rss4medics_2Looking for medical RSS feeds?  RSS files are now provided by many leading online medical journals and medical resources on the internet, such as PubMed, JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, the BMJ and Medscape. The rss4medics directory contains rss links (feeds) for medicine related internet sites and publications currently available on the web.  You can click on categories to see the rss medical feeds for that category. Within a category cick on the 'View' buttons to see all the latest news and headlines for that source. To add a feed to your rss reader (aggregator), simply copy the rss link that interests you and add it to your reader, normally by clicking on the 'Add new feed' button, or by clicking on 'File/Add Feed' on the menu (or something similar). You can search for rss feeds by using the MedWorm Medical RSS Filter Engine.

New Spanish Language Web Sites from the CDC and the NIA

Cdcenespanol_370px_2 The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has launched CDC en Español, an updated and expanded Spanish-language companion to its English-language Web site. The new CDC en Español at www.cdc.gov/spanish is not a mirror of the English site but instead a redesigned, separate Web site intended to serve as a vital source of health promotion and emergent information for Spanish speakers. With new features and new graphics, CDC en Español is more functional and useful—and also looks more like the English-language site, which was redesigned earlier this year.

Accurate, up-to-date information on health issues affecting Hispanic seniors is now available online in Spanish from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), part of the National Institutes of Health. The user-friendly website has information on a wide range of health topics, including diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer and diabetes. Helpful tips on choosing a doctor and maintaining a healthy lifestyle also are available at www.nia.nih.gov/Espanol.

The NIA website offers free publications in Spanish, as well as links to other health-related, Spanish-language websites such as Medicare and MedlinePlus. Publications include La enfermedad de Alzheimer: Desentrañando el misterio, El ejercicio y su salud, Accidente cerebrovascular, Conversando con su médico, and Cuidado a largo plazo. These materials have been carefully adapted into Spanish and reviewed by Hispanic seniors.

Dietarysupplementsdatabase_3

The National Library of Medicine has released a new resource focused on dietary supplements. The Dietary Supplements Labels Database http://dietarysupplements.nlm.nih.gov includes information from the labels of over 2,000 brands of dietary supplements in the marketplace, including vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, and other specialty supplements.

The database is designed to help both the general public and health care providers find information about ingredients in brand-name products, including name, form, active and inactive ingredients, amount of active ingredient/unit, manufacturer/distributor information, suggested dose, label claims, warnings, percentage of daily value, and further label information.

Links to other NLM resources, such as MedlinePlus and PubMed, are provided for additional health information. In addition, links to related Fact Sheets from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ( FDA), Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM ), and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) are also available.
