Access to Library Resources Dec 24 - 28

The College of Medicine IT Department will be performing a major network infrastructure upgrade from December 24 through December 28.  It will affect some of the library resources. While the library’s main page at http://www.med.fsu.edu/library will be available, direct links from the library’s e-journals and e-books pages will not be available during that time period.

To search the library’s e-journals from December 24 through December 28, please use “Serials Solutions (E-Journals).”  A link to Serials Solutions may be found in the right hand column of the library’s web page under “FSU University Library.”  Be sure to click on the “Off-Campus Access (EZProxy)” link first.

To search the library’s e-books from December 24 through December 28, please use the library’s “WebFeat – Meta Search Engine.”  A link to it may be found in the middle column of the library’s web page.  Be sure to click on the “Off-Campus Access (EZProxy)” link first.  Once connected to WebFeat, check the box in front of “Medical and Biomedical E-Books” under “Select Category” after typing in your search terms.

December 29 everything should be back to normal.

New Interface for AARP Ageline and HAPI

We have a new interface for AARP Ageline and HAPI (Health & Psychosocial Instruments).  The new interface for both is via EBSCO.

We will have access to both the current interface via Ovid and the new interface via EBSCO through March 2008.  After that time, the only interface will be via EBSCO.

To access AARP Ageline and HAPI via either interface, go to the library's home page and look for them in the scroll box.  If you are off campus, be sure to click on the "Off-Campus Access (EZProxy)" link first.

Rural Health Research Gateway Website and Listserv

Rhrglogo_3 Rural health research findings from eight national research centers, supported by the Federal Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP), are now featured at one convenient location, the Rural Health Research Gateway. This initiative is designed to help move the most up-to-date findings of the Rural Health Research Centers to policy makers, health care providers and others as quickly and efficiently as possible.

New information is launched on the listserv and its corresponding web site
<http://www.ruralhealthresearch.org> to provide easy and timely access to projects, research, and findings of these national research centers. The web site has abstracts of both current and completed research projects addressing issues such as rural health quality and behavioral health, related publications, and information about the researchers and research centers.

If you would like to receive the Rural Health Research Gateway postings, please sign-up at http://www.ruralhealthresearch.org/listserv/subscribe.php

GoPubMed

Gopubmed_4 GoPubMed is a knowledge-based  search engine designed to help biologists and medical doctors find relevant search results significantly faster.  It is based on PubMed.  It uses Gene Ontology and MeSH, a knowledge network of about 120,000 terms.  It fetches terms from the knowledge-base that are relevant to the query, displaying the results on the right side of the screen and navigation through the knowledge-base on the left.  The latest 1,000 results are shown. To retrieve more citations, the advanced search may be used.

The "Hot topics in GO & MeSH" feature translates the query into various charts and maps, providing a number of statistics on biomedical literature taking into account all PubMed abstracts. The "Top 5 categories" shows the five most relevant terms according to the query.  In the "Top Categories of GO & MeSH" folder, contextual terms are grouped into categories like diseases, biological process, and anatomy.  Results may also be filtered by author's name, journals, countries, and publication dates.

GoPubMed is one of the first Web 2.0 search engines.  The system was developed at the Technology University of Dresden by Michael Schroeder and his team at Transinsight.

To check it out, go to http://www.gopubmed.org or http://www.gopubmed.com  If you are off campus, to link out to our subscribed full-text content via GoPubMed, use this link  http://www.gopubmed.com.ezproxy.med.fsu.edu/  For information on how to use GoPubMed, go to http://www.gopubmed.org/GoMeshPubMed/gomeshpubmed/Help/Help/index.html

"Author in the Room" Series

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement has partnered with JAMA to facilitate the transition of science into practice through the series Author in the RoomSM.  In this series, the author of a study published in JAMA with the potential to change clinical practice will talk with clinicians during a conference call, facilitated by clinical experts in implementing changes in practice.

The call will be followed by a discussion group and participants will be assessed to determine the degree to which they believe they have implemented change within their practice.

The next "Author in the Room" will be Wednesday, December 19th, 2007, from 2pm - 3pm Eastern Time.  On December 19th, "Author in the Room" features Dena M. Bravata, MD, MS, author of "Using Pedometers to Increase Physical Activity and Improve Users' Health." Visit http://www.ihi.org/IHI/Programs/AudioAndWebPrograms/Author+in+the+Room.htm for an overview of the program, an archive of past programs, information about CME credit, and how to enroll.

In each weekly release, PsycCRITIQUES delivers approximately 18–20 reviews of psychological books, most from the current copyright year. Each release also includes a review of a popular film from a psychological perspective. Other content includes videos, comparative reviews, and the occasional retrospective review.

PsycCRITIQUES may be found in the pull down menu on the library's main page.  If you are off campus, be sure to click on the "Off Campus Access (EZProxy)" link first.

Online Health Information Training Curriculum for Older Adults

Seniorhealthsplash_2 Health issues are a vital concern for older adults, and surveys show that most of those who go online search for health and medical information. However, since only 34 percent of people age 65 and older are online, the majority of older adults are missing out on valuable health information. To broaden the numbers of older adults able to search for and find reliable health information online, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) has developed a free training curriculum for those who teach and work with older adults. This Toolkit for Trainers is now available on NIHSeniorHealth.gov, a senior-friendly Web site developed by the NIA and the National Library of Medicine (NLM), components of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). For more information about this program, read the news release at http://www.nih.gov/news/pr/nov2007/nlm-27.htm
