Firefox and Safari Problems in PubMed

Pubmed_4 If you use Firefox or Safari to access PubMed from the Maguire Medical Library website, you may have noticed that the garnet FSU icon does not always link to the full-text journal articles like it should.  The National Library of Medicine says that they are working vigorously to resolve the problem.

In the meantime, you have two options:

  • Use Internet Explorer or Opera (for Macintosh users)
  • Change the PubMed display to “abstract” or “citation”

All library links are functional in AbstractPlus with Internet Explorer.

ToxTown en español

Toxtown_2 Tox Town is now available in both English, http://toxtown.nlm.nih.gov
and en español, http://toxtown.nlm.nih.gov/espanol.

Visitors can learn in English or in Spanish about environmental health concerns and over 30 toxic chemicals in these imaginary neighborhoods: a City, Farm, Town, US-Mexico Border, and Port. In either language, Tox Town uses neighborhood scenes along with color, graphics, sounds, and animation to add interest to learning about connections between chemicals, the environment, and the public's health. Tox Town's target audience is high school, college and graduate students, educators, and the interested public.

Women's Health Resources from the National Library of Medicine

A new Web resource providing scientists and consumers with the latest information on significant topics in women's health research from scientific journals and other peer-reviewed sources is now available through the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The NLM Division of Specialized Information Services, Office of Outreach and Special Populations has partnered with the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) to create this one-stop resource.

The 2008 National Institutes of Health (NIH) Research Priorities for Women's Health were used to identify overarching themes, specific health topics, and research initiatives in women's health. Within each section of the Web site are topics with links to relevant and authoritative resources and research initiatives for women's health.

Women's Health Resources from the NLM Web site can be found at: http://sis.nlm.nih.gov/outreach/womenshealthoverview.html

Medical Schools and Rural Physicians

There have been long-standing public policy questions regarding the effectiveness of medical school programs focused on increasing the supply of rural physicians. A new, highly selective studies reviewed six medical school programs. The study found these medical school rural programs have been highly successful in increasing the supply of rural physicians, with an average of 53% to 64% of graduates practicing in rural areas. The studies reviewed in this report had wide variability in methodology, varying degrees of methodologic rigor, and used different definitions of rural. Nevertheless, taken in the aggregate, the authors of this report believe that the evidence regarding the effects of these programs is substantial. The authors feel the programs are generalizable and would substantially impact the supply and retention of rural physicians if they were widely replicated.
